Changing the Hardscape of the Urban Landscape with Interlock Bricks

Segmented block paving has become a familiar site throughout our urban landscape, replacing tarred and concrete surfaces predominantly with interlock bricks. Pedestrian and vehicle traffic surfaces need to endure high volumes of traffic and varying load capacities which, over time, cannot be sustained by average surfaces. Interlock bricks are replacing the old and tried hardscape materials due to their stability, low maintenance and durability. Playing a role in uplifting the urban landscape, MVA Bricks supplies interlock bricks to the commercial and industrial sectors.

Simplicity in the Interlock Design

As road surfaces are supported by rocks and soil, they need to be properly prepared to provide a stable foundation. Once the prep work has been completed and the interlock bricks are ready to be bedded, the need for cement to keep the bricks in place is eliminated as these bricks are designed to fit seamlessly into one another. As no cement is used, edge restraints need to come into play to keep the interlock bricks in position and prevent them from moving.

Visually Appealing Whilst Providing Structural Support

Large, paved sections of an area, such as shopping centres and parking lots, can be made aesthetically pleasing as the interlock bricks, supplied by MVA Bricks, are available in a variety of colours that can be bedded as a single colour or as multiple colours and pattern layouts. The most popular one is the herringbone pattern as it is visually attractive and the pattern itself ensures the best resistance to both horizontal and vertical changes in the surface making it ideal for industrial paving.

Strength and Durability

The simplistic design combined with visual appeal is all well and good but what about durability? Through their interlock design, these products have proven to be the most durable paving option in the commercial and industrial sectors as they can sustain varying load capacities. Interlocking creates a strong bond between the pavers making them resistant to movement under traffic, enabling the blocks to withstand heavy loads from cranes, trucks and forklifts.

Hassle-Free and Little to No Maintenance

When damaged, solid surfaces need to have whole sections replaced leading to expensive repair work and road closures. Should a section of the paving get damaged, all that needs to be done is to remove the bricks and replace them with new ones, leaving behind no evidence of repairs. As cement is not used, it makes interlock paving easy to clean. A simple sweep or a turn of the leaf blower will remove any unwanted debris.

Withstanding the Elements

Safety for road and pedestrian users must always come first. The interlock bricks, manufactured by MVA Bricks, are textured which provides a non-slip, all-weather surface. In areas where there is high pedestrian traffic, such as retail outlets and segmented walkways, having paving that can withstand the elements is necessary. Where other road surfaces may crack or show signs of deterioration due to the elements, interlock bricks will stand the test of time. Due to the simplistic installation of interlock paving, the structural integrity of the bricks isn’t affected by temperature.

The Sustainable Choice

With more companies turning towards sustainability, interlock paving is the way to go. During heavy rains, water needs to go somewhere. The water run-off from road surfaces carries with it oil, grease and other harmful chemicals and enters storm drains, which can become flooded during heavy rains. Being permeable, interlock bricks as a surface option provide natural drainage as excess water is filtered through the bricks to the surface material and then channelled back into the surrounding area.
