Kerbing is an integral part of the urban landscape, demarcating various surfaces, creating run-off channels alongside roadways and pathways right through to providing road structure support. Their longevity is dependent on how they are made and MVA Bricks manufactures and supplies wet-pressed kerbs, a unique method that assures product continuity in quality and strength.
What Makes Wet-Pressed Kerbs Unique?
Unlike other production methods, wet-pressed kerbs are made from a single mix and produced as single units, resulting in a longer-lasting product with guaranteed consistency throughout the batches. Specialised machines, referred to as concrete batch plants are used to combine specific quantities of sand, coarse aggregate and cement which are then combined with water and additives to produce the concrete. Once at the right consistency, the mixture is poured into moulds where vibration is used to fill any voids, release any air pockets and settle the concrete. The moulds are then pulsated for a period before they are set and cured. This production method helps to control and minimise delamination and colour variations.
Advantages of the Wet-Pressed Kerb Method
There are many advantages to using wet-pressed kerbing manufactured and supplied by MVA Bricks.
- As they are not pressed on-site, time is not wasted waiting for the concrete to set and cure.
- It is easier to achieve uniformity as the kerbs have been pre-cast.
- Quality is ensured as the kerbs are checked before leaving our factory.
- As time is money, our wet-pressed kerbs are delivered directly to sites and as they are batch-processed the cost is much less.
- By manufacturing them as single units, should any of the kerbing be damaged, instead of having to replace entire sections, only the damaged kerb needs to be replaced.
Different Uses of Wet-Pressed Kerbs
MVA Bricks offers a wide range of wet-pressed kerbs that serve to protect road users and provide a clear indication of different road surfaces and kerbs that can be used to separate various sections of gardens. Kerbs are versatile components of the urban infrastructure.
- Barrier kerbs
Barrier kerbs are designed to prevent vehicle encroachment on roads and visually guide vehicle traffic. The hazards on roads are numerous. By using barrier kerbs on sections of roadways where the separation of vehicle traffic is essential due to the high safety risks associated with traffic volumes and speed, the risks can be better controlled. During road construction, concrete kerbs are positioned on existing roadways to re-direct high traffic volumes at reasonable speeds.
- Semi-mountable kerbs
Semi-mountable kerbs provide stability to road edges and access to pavements where it is limited. In shopping malls and parking lots, the partial slope design is there to restrain vehicles from moving past a demarcated area. Should vehicles accidentally mount the kerb, the slope prevents damage to the tyres.
- Mountable and semi-mountable kerbs
Mountable kerbs are generally used at intersections and traffic circles to demarcate roadways from pavements and islands. Wedge-like in design, they make it easier for pedestrians with trolleys or prams, cyclists and the disabled to gain access to walkways and pathways. Kerbing also provides a visual contrast between the roadside and pedestrian paths. If vehicles accidentally run over these kerbs, the slope of the kerb should not result in the loss of vehicle control or damage to the vehicle.
- Channel and garden kerbs
Channel kerbs are often used as edge restraints channelling the flow of excess water away from road surfaces and paving. Garden kerbs are ideal for segregating various sections or levels of a garden and for clearly marking off garden beds. Both channel and garden kerbs add appeal to outdoor areas.
