The basic building blocks of any type of construction or home-DIY paving project are sand and cement. Without either, you would end up with loose paving or crumbling concrete structures. The dry and wet ingredients that need to be mixed together to make concrete as well as the sand needed to bed pavers have been tried and tested to make sure that they are effective and lasting. At MVA Bricks, we know that projects require quality mixes which is what you can expect from our sand and cement.
Can Sand and Cement be Used in Paving?
Sand and cement each work on their own and together when making concrete. However, when it comes to paving, sand is the key material. Should you decide to take on your own paving project, it is less daunting when you make use of the most suitable sand when preparing your surface for pavers. MVA Bricks supplies washed plaster sand and washed river sand, both of which are ideal for paving. The purpose of sand in paving is to provide a solid base for the pavers that will absorb excess water run-off without causing the pavers to lift, loosen or damage. Cement comes into the equation for the edging and run-off along the sides of the paved area.
The Importance of Sand in the Bedding Installation
Bedding sand is the most crucial aspect of the entire hardscape as it helps the stones to settle in the base and stay in place. It also serves as the levelling layer that evens out any bumps in the base letting you install your pavers evenly. Make sure that the sand you use does not contain particles larger than 9.5mm in size as this will cause the pavers to break over time. Rest assured that whether you choose MVA Bricks’ washed plaster sand or washed river sand, it will be free of large particles.
Cement the Edging
To keep the pavers from moving outwards due to the applied weight and to avoid damage to the edges of the bedded pavers, edging pavers need to be installed. By haunching the edges on the outside with concrete, the pavers will remain in place. It is ideal to have the paving edges flush with the level of the paving thereby allowing adequate run-off drainage on the outside of the haunched edging.
Tips When Installing Paving
· Installing paving isn’t quick and easy, so prepare to set several days aside for your paving project.
· Select your design pattern in advance and remember that a simple pattern is more sensible for driveways.
· Make sure that there is adequate drainage to prevent pooling.
· Always ensure that the sub-base level is well compacted.
· Using the correct bedding sand will ensure a solid foundation for the pavers.
The 4:2:1 Rule
For the DIY enthusiast and beginner contractor, when it comes to making concrete, always remember the 4:2:1 rule which is four parts crushed stone mixed with two parts of sand and one part of cement. Mixing the dry ingredients with water will provide you with the right consistency. A workable mixture should be smooth and have a plastic consistency, not dry and crumbly. This mix ratio is considered the safest for most kinds of concrete used in construction.
Sand and cement are used in the construction industry daily. Without these two “ingredients” working together, our urban landscape and cityscapes would not be what they are.
