Concrete Paving vs Cement Paving

Should you inadvertently refer to concrete paving as cement paving, you wouldn’t be far off the mark. To the layman’s eye, cement paving may look like concrete and vice versa. In fact, it would surprise you to know that cement paving does not exist, cement as a material is part of what comprises concrete paving. Concrete is part of a measured recipe between this powdery substance, sand and aggregates such as stone or grit.

Many builders and manufacturers develop their secret mixture to produce perfect concrete that has been set to their standards. At MVA Bricks, we have created our unique SABS-approved blend that we believe will stand the test of time.

When to Use Cement and When to Use Concrete

Understanding the basic differences between concrete and cement comes down to material strength. Cement alone cannot hold up to the stresses that a concrete mix can handle, limiting its uses to smaller, decorative projects. When mixed correctly, concrete yields high compressive strength which is why it is the most popular material used in construction for structural support and areas that experience heavy foot and vehicle traffic such as parking areas, roads and pedestrian pathways.

Some Circumstances Dictate the Need for Additional Cement When Paving

Ideally, cement is not used in the installation of concrete pavers unless necessary. Most often, pavers use sand as the bedding material, but circumstances can dictate that a firmer base material must be used. Over time, pavers tend to migrate outwards along the edges where various types of edging are used to keep them in place. However, should it be preferable that the pavers and edging are rigidly kept in place, a cement base will keep them immobilised.

The Advantages of Cement Paving

  • Concrete pavers are more cost-effective due to the lower cost of raw materials.
  • Available in a variety of colours and styles, the design combinations are limitless.
  • No matter what type of paver you select from MVA Bricks, the pavers are precisely uniform making them easy to install, and perfect for DIY projects.
  • Concrete pavers require little to no maintenance.
  • Flexible systems allow for movement without cracking, which is beneficial when there are extreme weather fluctuations.
  • It has a longer life expectancy than most paving options.
  • In pedestrian and vehicle traffic areas, they provide a safe and hard-wearing surface.
